MADURAI: As one more step in its Corona crisis management and relief measures, the Tamil Nadu State Government has today- 21st April 2020- started providing grocery items at a discounted price – 19 grocery items for Rs.500- in ration shops across the State.
This special initiative to help people was formally started at a fair price shop in Ponmeni in Madurai by Cooperation Minister Mr.Sellur K.Raju.
“The Tamil Nadu Government is providing grocery kits priced at Rs.500 each consisting of 19 items needed for cooking for the benefit of common people, The same pack in outside market and shops costs Rs.597. So people can save nearly Rs.100 for each grocery bag they buy at ration shops,” he said here today.
In Tamil Nadu, 10 lakh grocery kits containing 19 grocery items priced at Rs.500 will be available in ration shops. Through this the rates in grocery shops can be contained. Not only ration card holders, others also can avail this benefit and buy groceries item bags from fair price shops,” Mr.Sellur K.Raju told reporters after launching the sale. The groceries bag will contain food essentials for cooking.
“The Cooperatives Department has introduced this scheme in ration shops with no profit motive in the public interest,” the Minister said. Madurai District Collector Dr.T.G.Vinay, Madurai Corporation Commissioner Mr.S.Visakan and senior officials were present.
