MADURAI: A novel idea was conceived and given shape by the Madurai Corporation to prevent large crowds and groups of people in vegetable markets as a precautionary step to prevent spread of coronavirus and to ensure social distancing.
The Corporation has today-1on st April 2020- started providing vegetables in a sort of gift cover for Rs.250. The gift bag being sold through mobile vegetable vans will have 20 varieties of vegetables. Since the vegetable bags are ready packed in mobile vans, people need not spend a lot of time while buying.They can just pay and collect the bag.
The gift cover of vegetables contain potatoes, tomatoes, onions, beetroot, small onions, carrot, brinjal, puthina, lemon, banana, coconut, ‘karivepilla’, ‘malli’, ginger, cabbage etc – totally 20 varieties all in a prescribed quantity.
Today, the sale of these vegetable gift packs through mobile vans took place in 10 wards in Madurai city with the support of corporation staff, ‘Vaa Nanba’ volunteers and Villapuram wholesale vegetable sellers association besides a group of lawyers who volunteered to help.
