AMMA canteens, community kitchen give food in Madurai

MADURAI: The community kitchen which was set up to provide food to the poor and needy people by the Madurai Corporation is a blessing in disguise in the current situation affected by Coronavirus. Also, the Amma Canteens are supplying food three times a day, thereby preventing hunger among people in the present Section 144-complete lockdown scenario here.

On 28th March 2020, Madurai Corporation Commissioner Mr.S.Visakan along with officials, visited the community kitchen operating at Poonga Murugan Temple near Gandhi Museum where over 700 people are being provided food by the corporation during this lockdown period.

The Corporation Commissionerhad enquired about the food arranegements. He also sought details about the temporary shelter provided to pavement dwellers and homeless poor persons at various places in four zones of corporation area – at Vilangudi, Kakkaipadiniyar Corporation School, Poonga Murugan Temple, Keerathurai, Rani Mangammal Street, Palanganatham, Harveypatti etc where around 230 persons got shelter to stay. 

In 12 Amma canteens in Madurai city, food is bring provided for breakfast, lunch and dinner. While 12,800 idlis were supplied in morning breakfast at the usual price, 4,590 sambar rice and 2,950 crud rice were given in the afternoon lunch. At night time, 9,400 idlis are given, according to a press release from the Madurai Corporation here today.
