TIRUCHI: At a very ripe age of 103 years, a centenarian from Perambalur district, Mr.Duraisamy, had successfully underwent hip replacement at Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Tiruchi.
A multi-disciplinary doctors’ team at Apollo here had given yet another best possible medical outcome showing to the world that age is not a deterrent for surgery for fractures faced by geriatrics.
At a press conference conducted In Apollo Tiruchi today 21st February 2020, Dr.ArunGeethayan, consultant orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeon, Dr.K.Balasubramanian, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Dr.Karthick, consultant anaesthetist, Dr.Alagappan, consultant anaesthetist and Dr.VA.Sivam, medical administrator of the hospital, have explained in detail about how they managed to do half hip replacement successfully for the 103-year-old person.
“This patient Mr.Duraisamy sustained a hip fracture 50 days prior to hospitalization and was undergoing native treatment. He was unable to walk and had severe pain…….Old age was the reason cited for not seeking medical attention. But the facilities available at Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Tiruchi here had changed the situation completely,” the doctors’ team told media persons at today’s press meet.
According to press release given by the hospital, the ripe old man had blood clots in his leg veins and bedsores due to prolonged immobilization. Apollo specialists assessed very senior citizen Mr.Duraisamy’s suitability for surgery and expert opinion was taken from cardiologists, physicians and anaesthetists.
Later, Consultant Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon Dr.Arungeethayan led the procedure and Apollo team was successful, it was explained and it was also stressed that hip fractures and other fragility issues occur among the elderly. They require immediate treatment after consulting specialist doctors.
