MADURAI: The Smart City plans of Madurai Corporation are gradually taking shape. Today, on 6th February 2020, Tamil Nadu Cooperation Minister Mr.Sellur K.Raju had inaugurated micro compost centres established at various places here as a part of clean city initiatives.
Accompanied by Madurai Corporation Commissioner Mr.S.Visakan, the Minister declared open the compost manufacturing centres set up at a cost of around Rs.3.75 crores.
The domestic waste and garbage is being collected from homes and residential localities here through tricycles after which segregation is done.In the first phase , 25 comp[ost centres have come up. Fund allocation is being done from ‘Swachch Bharat’ and Smart City projects and the total allocation for this compost units for Madurai is Rs.33.50 crores, according to a press release from the Madurai Corporation here today.

The compost centres project covers several places including Zone-1 Ward 22 kochadai, Thathaneri, Tiruparankundram etc.
Among those present at today’s inaugural function include Madurai North MLA Mr.V.V.Rajan Chellappa, Chief Engineer Mr.Arasu and senior officials of Madurai Corporation besides staff and sanitary workers.
