Avaniapuram Jallikattu: Police arrest protesters (Video)

MADURAI: The world famous Avaniapuram ‘Jallikattu’ festival event took a serious turn today 6th Jan 2020 with the arrest of 140 protesters by Madurai district police.

They were demanding that the ‘Jallikattu’ must be conducted under the auspices of Avaniapuram Village Committee and not as decided by the Tamil Nadu State Government through its objectionable order. (Jallikattu in Avaniapuram takes place on Pongal festival day 1st day of ‘Thai’ month)

OBJECTS GOVT ORDER:

Citing differences between two local groups, it was stated that the Avaniapuram Jallikattu will be conducted by a committee that includes ‘both Thenkaal Pasana Vivasayigal’ and Avaniapuram Grama Committee, A few peace meetings were held by Thasildhar and RDO in this regard to bring about unity between the warring groups. Since there was no resolution to this issue, the Government had stated that Madurai District Collector will form a committee comprising representatives from both the groups.

Objecting to this direction, people of Avaniapuram had resorted to a protest demanding that the ‘Jallikattu’ should be conducted by Village Committee and a fresh order must be issued in this regard. Representatives of various political parties and voluntary organizations participated in the protest today on the airport road near Avaniapuram.
