MADURAI: Tension prevailed in Melur near Madurai today after wrong announcement was made about the names of winner and loser in the rural local body elections for which counting of votes took place.
At the Government Arts College in Melur which was the counting centre, the loser was declared winner while the actual winner’s name was announced as loser through public address system. The confusion was with regard to the counting of votes for Navinipatti panchayat president post.
Angry supporters of the candidate who was declared defeated had protested with the BDO and complained to local police by sitting on dharna. The aggrieved candidate took up the matter with Madurai district Collector Dr.T.G.Vinay and subsequently recounting of votes was done. They also agitated before BDO Mr. Kathiravan.
And, finally the candidate who was first announced as defeated had actually won with a margin of 62 votes, thanks to recounting.
