Southern Railway GM inspects Madurai Junction redevelopment works; Officials explain about multi-level parking, skywalks and new terminals

MADURAI: Southern Railway General Manager Mr.R.N.Singh had inspected and reviewed the progress Madurai railway junction redevelopment works here yesterday-February 14th 2025.

Senior railway officials had briefed him about the various works that have been taken up at Madurai railway station at a cost of Rs.347 crores through Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract because Madurai Junction railway station handles 96 trains per day and registers an average passenger footfall of more than 51,000 per day attracting scores of pilgrims and tourists from all over India and abroad.

Under this redevelopment project, the Madurai railway junction gets two new terminals on eastern and western side of the station, a subway connecting the railway premises and Periyar bus stand, a dedicated Foot Over Bridge (FOB) for parcel movement, two skywalks, approach roads for better movement of passenger vehicles and one skywalk for arriving passengers connecting the auto and bus bays, a press release received from Madurai Division of Southern Railway has informed here yesterday evening after the GM’s inspection.

Three multi-level parking structures with an air-concourse will be built at Madurai railway junction to facilitate segregation of arrival and departure. Eastern side multi-level car parking can accommodate 244 four-wheeler vehicles. A multi-level two-wheeler parking is also coming up with this station redevelopment works and it can accommodate 451 two-wheelers. In addition to that, there will be ground level parking also for 700 two-wheelers on the eastern side.

The works that have been completed and the works that are in progress now were explained to the Southern Railway General Manager Mr.R.N.Singh during this inspection in Madurai on February 14th 2024. Divisional Railway Manager Mr.Sharad Srivastava and Mr.K.G.Gnanasekhar, Deputy Chief Engineer and engineers from Madurai division and construction organization were present.

Earlier in the day, the Southern Railway General Manager also visited Rameswaram and reviewed the arrangements to be made for inauguration of new railway bridge at Pamban and he also reviewed the ongoing station redevelopment works at Rameswaram railway station. Mr.G.M.Eswara Rao, IG-cum-Principal Chief Security Commissioner of Southern Railway, Madurai Divisional Railway Manager Mr.Sharad Srivastava and RVNL senior officials were among those present.
