
MADURAI: Doctors at Velammal Hospital in Madurai had successfully removed an open safety pin from a six-months old baby recently who accidentally swallowed it.
The team of experts including paediatricians, gastroenterologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac anaesthetists and radiologists at Velammal Hospital here had removed open safety pin that got lodged in the food pipe of a six-months old infant baby and it was just a few millimeters away from the heart, according to a press release received from the hospital.
The baby was taken to the emergency department of Velammal Hospital after the baby accidentally swallowed a safety pin and it got lodged in the baby’s digestive system. This happened on November 22nd 2024.
Dr.Deepak James, consultant gastroenterologist at Velammal Hospital, with the support of consultant gastroenterologist Dr.R.T.Narendhran, consultant pediatrics Dr.Thenmurugan and senior consultant cardiothoracic surgeons Dr.M.S.Ramprassath and Dr.Anupama Rao, cardiac anesthetists Dr.Sasikumar and Dr.Kishore and senior radiology consultant Dr.Mariappan took a comprehensive approach to remove the ope safety pin by using advanced imaging techniques to locate the pin before performing the endoscopic procedure, the press release said.
Dr.Deepak James said that the baby’s safety was important because the safety pin was just a few millimeters away from aorta which is the largest blood vessel in the heart. After the safety pin was successfully removed, the infant baby was put under medical observation and then discharged from the hospital thanks to the expert doctors at Velammal Hospital in Madurai, the press release added.
