Livestock Census underway in Madurai to collect data of all animals; Mobile App being used for enumeration

MADURAI: The 21st Livestock Census 2024 enumeration to collect the data of all animals has started in Madurai district and enumerators are now on the field to get information about livestock through this census.

This survey will go on for about four months period to be done by 243 livestock enumerators and above them there are supervisors from the Department of Animal Husbandry who are going to submit the data to State and Central government authorities who are connected to the livestock census.

“Our Madurai District Collector had started this livestock survey in our district. We began the enumeration from Madurai Meenakshi Temple Gosala where we have a good number of cows. Our enumerators will record all the details about animals in our Madurai district… from elephants to cows to poultry and dogs, sheep, goats, buffaloes etc…. This livestock being done at national level will be completed in the next four to six months,” Dr.S.Nandhagopal, Regional Joint Director in-charge, Department of Animal Husbandry-Madurai district, has informed here today.

He also said that a mobile app was given to the enumerators this time to collect the animals data and all particulars about animals and their owners will be recorded in this livestock survey by 4,000 enumerators who are in the field now.

“They will cover every house in urban and rural areas. We will get animal population data, vaccination details, owners info etc through this animal census now being done in Madurai district as a part of the national and State-level livestock census 2024 exercise,” Dr.S.Nandagopal has said today in Madurai- October 25th 2024.

All the livestock data will be uploaded in the Government website and based on that further policy formation for livestock and animal welfare will be done by the officials.
