MADURAI: In a very significant development in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the prestigious Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) in Madurai has taken a big leap by launching a global research centre for Tamil and Artificial Intelligence-TAMARAI.
This decision comes following the suggestions and feedback received from a few technology experts at the TCE Founder’s Day celebration function held in the college campus on July 29th 2024.
“It will pioneer research to develop indigenous and inclusive Tamil language models, bridging the gap between ancient wisdom and cutting edge AI. This facility is set to revolutionise the landscape of technological innovation in the region here, fostering growth and propelling TCE into a future that is driven by AI,” Mr.Hari Thiagarajan, Chairman and Correspondent of TCE, has said in a press release from Madurai on August 12th 2024.
HOW AI TAMIL GLOBAL CENTRE WILL WORK?
Mr.Soma Velayutham, an expert from California, has said that TCE is uniquely positioned to contribute to the Tamil Gen AI domain with its wealth of Tamil resources and scholars from Thiagarajar College of Arts and Science in Madurai, a high pedigree of engineering students and faculty.
Mr.Hari Thiagarajan had stressed that the TCE’s AI centre will foster collaboration between academia and industry, thereby leveraging AI to modernize Tamil language making it more accessible in digital platforms.
“The research focus of the centre will be for a comprehensive Tamil language model development, optimized Tamil content generation, establishing Tamil AI benchmarks and preserving linguistic integrity in translation. The centre will be funded by industries and guided by leading researchers from other higher learning institutions in India and experts from Silicon Valley,” the TCE Correspondent informed and added that the focus will be on challenges related to language translation, document summarization, paraphrase identification and Tamil corpus creation.
