MADURAI: Anaemia screening and reproductive health/ adolescent education initiative project was taken up in the last few months in 24 corporation schools of Madurai Corporation to screen the school-going children as a public health intervention at right age.
“Anaemia is an important health issue. Screening was done in corporation schools in Madurai city and the final report on anaemic condition among students will be ready by this month end. It will be submitted to the top level authorities of Madurai Corporation by the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) here by end of this May,” Dr.S.Prathiban, Branch Manager of FPAI-Madurai Branch, told ‘Lotus Times’ English news website here in Madurai on May 18th 2024.
This anaemia screening-hemoglobin level…. and reproductive health education initiative was done jointly by FPAI and HCL Foundation, he said.
Preliminary indication from this anaemia screening in 24 Madurai Corporation schools in the city is that boys are also anemic and some extra attention will be required for school boys also.
“The general and usual perception is that more school girls will need anaemia control intervention. But, in our Madurai study as per the first observation by our team, school boys in Madurai Corporation schools also are anaemic and they need anaemia prevention intervention,” Dr.S.Prathiban added.
The FPAI is focusing on the health of children at adolescent stage and hence anaemia screening was taken up as an important project in schools and this screening exercise was done for eight months in 24 corporation schools in Madurai by FPAI thanks to the support of HCL Foundation and the report will give results about anaemia levels among school children, reproductive health, infertility issues etc.
“Data collection is almost over and evaluation is going on now. FPAI will give the report to the research study consultancy and the final report will be given to Madurai Corporation soon,” Dr.S.Prathiban has said in Madurai today.
