MADURAI:The PG Department and Research Centre of English in Lady Doak College (LDC) in Madurai had organized a ‘Meet the Author’ programme on 31st August 2023 by inviting a well-known Tamil writer Mr.Perumal Murugan as guest speaker.

He has authored 12 novels, six collections of short stories, six anthologies of poetry and also non-fiction works. Most of his novels have been translated into English including ‘Seasons of the Palm’ which got shortlisted for the Kiriyama Prize. His first novel ‘Rising Heat’ was published in 1991.

While addressing the students, author Mr.Perumal Murugan had shared his experiences in writing and how he became an author. “To the aspiring writers, the foremost requirement is reading and writing on an everyday basis. You can begin with diary writing which involves a lot of methods that a creative writer employs such as recall, reflection and selection of events,” he said and added that there are greater opportunities for writers in English.

Speaking about the popularity of literary works, he maintained that it lies in the portrayal of characters or an idea or an incident that is unique to a region and its people. Dr.R.Beulah Jeyashree, college Vice-Principal, Head and Associate Professor of English, gave opening remarks at this ‘Meet the Author’ programme.

Dr.C.Jessie Ranjitha Jebaselvi, Chaplain and Associate Professor of English and several faculty members were present in this programme which was attended by around 400 students from UG and PG classes, 40 faculty from English and Tamil departments, and a few faculty from nearby colleges, according to a press release received from the college yesterday.
