MADURAI: The scuffle between two faculty members of MKU College in Madurai yesterday is becoming a serious issue among teaching fraternity as teachers’ association MUTA had today demanded that the police must file a FIR immediately against the college vice-principal and associate professor Dr.P.Kabilan for attacking MUTA president Dr.A.T.Senthamarai Kannan in the college campus on August 15th 2023.

There was reportedly an altercation and argument between the two faculty members of Madurai Kamaraj University College at Alagarkoil Road in Madurai when both of them came to the college for attending Independence Day celebration yesterday. The issue, it was learnt, was about a complaint made by a few students against Prof.P.Kabilan with the MKU Registrar.

Condemning the assault and physical attack on its president, the MUTA had today appealed to the Tallakulam police in Madurai (where a complaint was lodged) to immediately register a FIR against Dr.P.Kabilan.

Speaking to reporters at a press meet in Madurai today morning, MUTA general secretary Dr.M.Nagarajan has said that the police should file FIR without any delay and the matter must be probed/investigated in a fair and unbiased manner.

“An associate professor who is also MUTA president was assaulted inside his college campus on Independence Day. This is not a small issue or a casual matter. We want the police to do a thorough investigation. How can you attack a faculty member even if you have a difference of opinion? There are eye-witnesses when this assault against MUTA president Dr.A.T.Senthamarai Kannan took place in MKU College campus yesterday. So, we request the Madurai city police and Tallakulam police station to conduct an impartial enquiry,” MUTA general secretary Dr.M.Nagarajan has said addressing a press conference here on 16th August 2023.

MANIPUR VIOLENCE ISSUE:

Responding to a question on whether the scuffle and argument between the two associate professors was due to denial of permission to students to hold a protest condemning the violence in Manipur, the MUTA general secretary has said that there is nothing wrong on the part of college students asking for permission to protest the violence taking place in the State of Manipur.

“Ours is a democratic country. Dissent, protest and objections are part of democracy. First of all, the creation of Vice-Principal post in MKU College is itself a major violation. Keeping that matter aside, MUTA strongly demands FIR to be registered against Prof.P.Kabilan for assaulting our MUTA president. We want the police to speak to eye witnesses and take CCTV footage also from the college. This matter was taken to the attention of city police commissioner, and we want the Madurai Kamaraj University authorities also to take action against him,” MUTA general secretary Dr.M.Nagarajan has said.

Dr.M.Umayavalli, vice-president of MUTA and Dr.Raja Jeyasekar, treasurer, were among those present at the press meet in Madurai today.
