MADURAI: As admissions for undergraduate courses 2023-24 are taking place, there is a tension among some administrative staff of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) here because of shortage of classrooms and hostel accommodation for students joining this year in various UG courses, according to MKU sources.

The staff in various administration sections of the university are now struggling to find space for classrooms and hostel because new courses have been started and more number of students are going to enter the campus.

“Difficulty in providing classrooms for UG students was taken to the attention of university administration and MKU Syndicate members because the last year UG students are now entering into second year and new students are coming for first year UG admissions this year. There is going to be a huge problem in finding classrooms for UG students in the next few days because the tentative date for commencing of UG classes is July 3rd 2023,” sources in Senate and Syndicate of MKU told ‘Lotus Times’ media website www.lotustimes.org in Madurai today.

MKU administrative staff are worried that UG admissions and new UG courses were started this year without proper planning and consultation with all departments. “Already, we had a problem last academic year for UG students because of shortage of classrooms. This year, the problem is going to be more intense because our university had launched new UG courses and already there is a shortage of classrooms. The first year students and second year students of UG courses in our university will find it very difficult to accommodate the UG students in classrooms and hostels. What will the authorities do now and what will be the Syndicate members’ action plan remains to be seen and only a few days left,” a couple of MKU staff members, have said in Madurai on June 23rd 2023.
