MADURAI: The ‘Save MKU Coalition’ has strongly condemned the abrupt sacking and removal of 135 temporary staff of the university in one stroke without any sort of notice. It has termed the university administration’s decision as arbitrary and a move taken without any compassion. This decision is being criticized as the new Vice-Chancellor Dr.J.Kumar assumed charge only on 1st April 2022. The ‘Save MKU Coalition’ has urged the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr.M.K.Stalin to immediately intervene and take steps to reinstate these sacked temporary employees on humanitarian grounds.

Dr.R.Murali, secretary, Save MKU Coalition and its president Mr.A.Srinivasan, in an urgent press statement issued from Madurai on 10th April 2022, has said that the 135 temporary workers had worked for 10 years in the university and they were given very low salary. “These temporary staff worked for very long hours and the manner in which they were removed from job by the MKU administration a few days back is shocking. It is inhuman and the authorities did not show any compassion,” the press statement said.

“Many of these employees were recruited through direct written test. If their recruitment is wrong, then all those who were behind their appointment are responsible- including Syndicate members, Vice-Chancellors etc. We request the Chief Minister Mr.Stalin to intervene in this important matter and instruct the MKU authorities to take back the 135 temporary staff who were removed from service.,” the press statement pointed out.

Dr.Murali and Mr.Srinivasan had expressed concern over the very bad financial position of MKU and appealed to the State government to extend special financial support to this university. “The Labour Act service rules clearly says about workers protection. So, the removed temporary workers must be made permanent employees. There are hundreds of vacancies in MKU and have to be filled up atleast on temporary basis,” the ‘Save MKU Coalition’ has appealed from Madurai on 10th April 2022.
