13-year-old boy with severe headache undergoes successful brain surgery at Madurai Apollo Hospital

MADURAI: The Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Madurai had successfully performed keyhole brain surgery for a 13-year-old boy who had a ruptured brain aneurysm after he developed severe headache following a sudden fall in the restroom. A team of specialist doctors in neurology, critical care and paediatrics had done the procedure as advanced imaging of the blood vessels of his brain had revealed brain aneurysm in a major blood vessel inside the brain. This keyhole brain surgery was performed here three weeks ago for the boy who is studying 6th standard.

At a press meet held in Madurai today- on 15th February 2022- the team of doctors of Madurai Apollo who were involved in the successful surgery and treatment for the boy had explained about this ruptured brain surgery which is rare in young age.

Dr.D.Shyam, neurosurgeon, told reporters that stress is a predominant cause for ruptured brain aneurysm and this 13-year-old boy went to restroom in lunch break after attending online class and there he fell down unconscious suddenly. “His parents rushed him to hospital immediately and that saved the boy. The golden hour is important. After he was brought to Apollo Hospital, we examined the boy, advanced imaging of blood vessels of his brain was done and within three hours he underwent a successful micro surgical keyhole clipping surgery. He had recovered in five days and was discharged from hospital without any problem,” Dr.Shyam said.

Stating that brain stroke is life-threatening and early detection is important, he said that one has to be careful if there is a severe / worst unbearable headache.

Paediatrician Dr.Murugan Jeyaraman has said that ruptured brain is rare for children and it is predominantly due to congenital factors and hemodynamic stress. For adults, the risk factors are smoking, hypertension, diabetes etc. The team of doctors who were involved in this successful surgery were: Dr.D.Shyam, neurosurgeon, Dr.S.N.Karthik, neurologist, Dr.Murugan Jeyaraman, pediatrician, Dr.Kevin Joseph, neurosurgeon, Dr.B.Nisha, neuroanaesthetist, Dr.G.Padmaprakash, intensivist and pulmonologists, radiologists and emergency physicians.
