Madurai city to get 103 tar roads as Corpn focuses on damaged roads; Rs.16.32 crores is estimated cost in first phase

MADURAI: Some important areas in Madurai city will soon get new tar roads as the Corporation has begun works to refurbish and lay 103 tar roads at an estimated cost of Rs.16.32 crores in the first phase, with particular focus on those places that were added to the city Corporation. The areas being covered in this phase are Anaiyur and Koodalnagar in Zone-1, Thiruppalai and Kannanendhal in Zone-2 here. Commercial Taxes Minister Mr.P.Moorthy had given a kick-start for the works related to laying of new tar roads in the formal bhoomi puja ceremony, in the presence of top corporation officials here on 16th December 2021- Thursday.

A press release from the Madurai Corporation today had informed that the required fund to meet the costs was allotted from Capital Grant Fund 2021-22 and Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project Fund (TURIF). The localities where new tar roads will come up soon include Koodal Nagar, Anaiyur, Sambandhar Alangulam, Thiruppalai, Kannanendhal, Parasuramanpatti, Athikulam, Uthangudi and Naganakulam.

The Madurai Corporation press release had pointed out that underground drainage works and drinking water pipelines works were completed in these identified areas and hence the laying of tar roads is being taken up there. Roads that were battered and damaged because of rains will be refurbished through road repair works and tar roads will be provided.

Among those who were present today include Sholavandhan MLA Mr.Venkatesan, Madurai Corporation Commissioner Dr.K.P.Karthikeyan, City Engineer in-charge Mr.Arasu, corporation assistant commissioner Mr.Dakshinamurthy, executive engineer Mr.Baskaran and PRO Mr.Maheswaran.
