MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has welcomed the Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi’s announcement made on 19th November 2021 to withdraw the three farm laws which are detrimental to the
farmers.
In a press statement issued from Madurai yesterday, TN Chamber president Mr.N.Jegatheesan has urged the Union government on behalf of the trade & industry to formally withdraw the three agricultural laws which are detrimental to the farmers, in the upcoming winter session of the first day of the Parliament itself, in the interest of the farmers who are not only feeding the country but also the backbone of our country.
“The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation Act) 2020, The Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) agreement of Price assurance and Farm services Act 2020 and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act
2020 were passed during the winter session of Parliament in 2020 and all the three acts were passed in both houses of Parliament and enacted by the President of India that same month. Gradually, the govt’s share will be eliminated and agriculture produce purchases and storage in private hands will lead to farmers being dependent on private sector,” the press release had pointed out.
The TN Chamber’s press statement has said that due to unlimited storage, goods will be hoarded and artificial famine will occur as the purchase price is determined by the private sector; arbitrarily increasing prices will cause small farmers to gradually find refuge in the hands of big corporate and will be forced into a contract and cultivate what to cultivate and what to do; the farmers strongly protested as the agricultural laws contained many adverse aspects which includes the loss of crop yields.
Mr.N.Jegatheesan has stressed that the heroic struggle of the farmers and the sacrifice of the lives of more than 600 farmers were crucial to the end of this stalemate. “Though the Prime Minister has now announced to
withdraw the said 3 agricultural laws, there is a problem in ending the farmers’ agitation as the problem
will be solved only if the act is withdrawn in the upcoming winter session of the Parliament in which the
above 3 agricultural laws are being passed into law. Hence, On behalf of trade and industry TN Chamber urges the Union Govt. to formally withdraw the three agricultural laws which are detrimental to the farmers, in the upcoming winter session of the first day of the Parliament itself, in the interest of the farmers who are not only feed the country but also the backbone of our country,” he added.
