MADURAI: The Southern Railway has achieved a new feat recording a substantial increase in its freight and parcel revenues in the first two months- April and May- of this financial year 2021-22. The total earnings from parcel and freight traffic in April and May 2021 is Rs.427.35 crores and Rs.14.92 crores. (Compared to last year, this was an increase of 331 per cent (freight) and 53 per cent (parcel) respectively.
The Madurai Division of Southern Railway fetched an amount of Rs.32.51 crores under freight revenue in the first two months of this fiscal- April and May 2021. This is 43.78 per cent higher than corresponding period- which was Rs.22.61 crores. Madurai Division had handled 0.31 million tonnes during the last two months (April and May 2021) whereas the handling was 0.19 million tonnes in the corresponding period last fiscal.
A press release from the Madurai Division of Southern Railway here on 3rd June 2021 had informed that 2,057 tonnes of parcels were transported through passenger special trains during April and May 2021. This is 954 per cent more than the corresponding period since the parcel loading was only 195 tonnes in corresponding period last fiscal.
Ticket checking earnings was nearly Rs.68 lakhs through 11,755 cases in April and May 2021. Goods trains are operated at an average speed of 51.02 KMPH. The major commodities dealt in Madurai Division are coal, fertilizer, tractors and charcoal. “Well formulated strategies gave impetus to freight and parcel service,” the press release added.
