

MADURAI: The Southern Railway has released a few important details and salient features of the new Pamban bridge which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi in Tamil Nadu today-April 6th 2025.
Pamban railway bridge is located in Tamil Nadu in Ramanathapuram district connecting Indian mainland with Rameswaram island. The old Pamban railway bridge was commissioned for metro gauge traffic on 24-2-1914. During guage conversion, Pamban bridge was strengthened for broad gauge standard and was opened for broad gauge traffic on 12-8-2007.
The Ministry of Railways sanctioned reconstruction of Pamban railway bridge during February 2019 and the sub-structure of the bridge is built to cater for future double line with electrification. The lifting operation of old bridge is by manual means whereas the new Pamban railway bridge will be operated by electro-mechanical system, which will be interlocked with train control systems for the operation of navigational span, the Southern Railway has informed the media.
