MADURAI: Senate member of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) in Madurai Dr.A.Velanganni Joseph has today appealed to the Tamil Nadu State government that only an eligible senior faculty member from arts and science streams, arts and science colleges or related universities in the State should be appointed as a Vice-Chancellor of MKU, a post that is vacant now.

“I am requesting to make suitable amendments to MKU Act and make it clear that only a person from arts and science colleges background should be appointed as VC of our university. The candidates applying for becoming MKU Vice-Chancellor should have exposure to arts and science colleges and their administration. The statute of MKU must be amended accordingly to ensure that,” Dr.A.Velanganni Joseph had stressed while speaking at the Senate meeting held in Madurai today-March 28th 2025.

The Senate member had pointed out that the selection of a Vice-Chancellor should be done as per the universities’ guidelines and it has to be done from respective disciplines. “A person can become VC of agriculture, medical, sports or fisheries universities in our State of Tamil Nadu only as per their respective expertise in the field…..So, for an arts and science university like ours in MKU, the Vice-Chancellor candidate and VC aspirant should have had experience in arts and science colleges or related arts and science universities as an eligible faculty….This should be supported by Senate members of MKU,” he said here today.

His point which was raised in today’s Senate meeting was supported by Dr.M.Sulthan Ibrahim, associate professor and Head of Department of Computer Science, Government Arts College in Veerapandi in Theni district. This issue assumed significance in today’s Senate meeting because a few Vice-Chancellors in recent years were appointed from technical universities like the Anna University in Chennai and from other institutions.
