MADURAI: A fervent appeal has been made today to consider taking steps for converting the Madurai Kamaraj University College (MKU College) in Madurai city into a Government college because of its current financial position and since there is no co-education college run by the State government in Madurai city corporation limits.

The request was made by MKU Academic Council member Dr.G.Prabakaran at the academic council meeting held here today-March 27th 2025- where he urged the Collegiate education authorities to impress upon the State government for making this constituent college in to government college due to its good student strength and financial needs.

Ms.E.Sundaravalli, Commissioner of Collegiate Education and Conveners Committee chairperson, Tamil Nadu Government, who chaired the AC meeting here today had listened to the views expressed by members on this issue and collected points on how it will be beneficial for students if MKU College in Madurai which is now a constituent college is converted into a government college.

This matter assumed significance because Academic Council member Dr.A.Velanganni Joseph had questioned how MKU College can take funds from GPF fund and use them for other requirements without taking the university’s permission.

“MKU College’s bank account in a Tallakulam bank in Madurai city should be handled jointly by the college and university. How can CPS or GPF fund be used or diverted for their needs? So, I am demanding for a full-fledged enquiry in MKU College. Please form an enquiry committee today to find out the facts because amount from GPF was withdrawn,” Dr.A.Velanganni Joseph had complained to the Commissioner of Collegiate Education today at the Academic Council meeting.

Intervening at this juncture, another senior member of Academic Council Dr.K.Sadasivam has said that he had earlier visited the college for an enquiry and he found that some other violation took place in MKU College at Alagarkoil Road in Madurai.

“That college has only 22 permanent faculty whereas there more than 70 guest lecturers. The number of students is large and MKU College is being run on a self-sustained model even though it has a separate Act as per university guidelines for constituent college. So, instead of an enquiry into funds diversion, I want a probe about a faculty member,” he added.

Responding to the members’ request, the Commissioner of Collegiate Education Ms.E.Sundaravalli has said that any decision for converting MKU College into a government college can be taken only later as it is a policy matter of the government and nothing can be said today.

This MKU College matter came up for discussion as an agenda item on Page 7 of the Academic Council meeting of the university today following a question raised by Dr.K.Mohan, associate professor and Head, Department of English, Madurai Kamaraj University College, Madurai who said in his question saying “resolved to request the MKU Syndicate to merge the MKU College-Madurai with Madurai Kmaaraj University A/C no.1 or to make necessary steps to make it as a government college considering the financial viability and the future of its staff and students of this college”.
