Intellectual Property Rights workshop at MKU: Experts focus on patents, GI filing procedures and copyrights

IPR workshop at MKU on March 3rd 2025.

MADURAI: A one-day workshop on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) was organised by the IPR Cell of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) here on March 3rd 2025 with focus on ‘Navigating the world of IPR: Filing, Technology Transfer and Commercialization’ to disseminate knowledge about IPR to various stakeholders.

Prof.M.Ramakrishnan, Registrar in-charge, MKU, had inaugurated the workshop while Prof.B.Mayil Vaganan, Syndicate member and Convener Committee member of the varsity, had presided over the inaugural session and Dr.P.Varalakshmi, Nodal Officer of IPR Cell, welcomed the delegates.

Mr.A.Raja, Deputy Controller of Patents and Design, Chennai Patent Office, delivered a lecture on importance of patent filing, role of patents in economic growth, patentable and non-patentable products and the processes of filing a patent, according to a press release received from the university yesterday.

Mr.S.Sivakumar, Assistant Registrar of TM, GI and CR, Chennai Patent Office, spoke on Geographical Indication tag, filing and processing and how GI is used for marketing unique products that are produced from specific geographic region of the country.

Mr.P.Jeyaselvam, assistant director of DFO-MSME (Madurai), had explained about MSME schemes and reimbursement procedures available in State and Central governments. Mrs.N.Kumutha, project scientist II, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, gave a hands-on training about patented products marketed through technology transfer and commercialization.

More than 100 students and faculty members from MKU and various colleges had attended this workshop which was important to enhance knowledge about patents and copyrights etc. Dr.R.Rajesh, member, IPR Cell, had proposed a vote of thanks.
