MADURAI: An advanced surgery for brain epilepsy was successfully performed for a 30 year young man recently by the neurology team at Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital in Madurai.

The young male patient from Tirunelveli now got a permanent relief from years of drug-resistant epilepsy after the neuro team doctors had done ‘temporal lobectomy with amygdalo-hippocampectomy’ surgical procedure which is rarely performed in southern districts of Tamil Nadu and the neuro team here had removed the brain tissue responsible for his seizures.

“We had thoroughly evaluated and surgically removed the brain tissue on left side. This surgery was done about two months back and this person is now leading a normal active life. It was a three-hour surgery that was performed by our skilled neurosurgical team of senior doctors. This patient was suffering severe fits earlier but thanks to the advanced neuroscience technology expertise and medical infrastructure available in our hospital, that particular is now free of brain seizures. This open brain surgery was done to remove the tissue in affected areas without impacting other brain structures,” Dr.Vijay Anand, Senior Consultant and Head of Department of Neurology and Dr.S.Narendiran, senior consultant, Department of Neurology, told reporters at a press conference held in Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital in Madurai today-January 28th 2025.

The frequent brain seizures that was occurring multiple times in a week had impacted the patient’s life and it is a risky thing for the life, they added.

“We used advanced diagnostic technology available in our hospital including 3T MRI, PET CT and Video EEG to precisely identify the epilepsy source. This patient will just need to continue taking anti-epileptic drugs for a year. We are informing this to the media because sudden seizures of brain epilepsy leads to accidents and cause patient loses awareness of his surroundings,” the neurology doctors team said along with Dr.Selvamuthukumaran, senior consultant and HoD of Department of Neurosurgery and Dr.K.Senthil Kumar, senior consultant, Department of Neurosurgery,

Mr.Dileep Bernard of Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital here told reporters that this hospital is one of the very few medical institutions in Tamil Nadu that is equipped with advanced neuroscience technology and expert neuro teams to handle epilepsy surgery.
