Smoking in Vande Bharat Express: Railway teams watching CCTV footage to catch the offender in Nagercoil-Chennai VB Express

MADURAI: Railway authorities are analyzing the CCTV recordings to identify the passenger who smoked inside Coach E1 of train number 20628 Nagercoil Junction-Chennai Egmore Vande Bharat Express on December 22nd 2024.

On that day, the train was halted for six minutes at Thamaraipadi railway station near Dindigul after the smoke warning system was triggered because of the passenger’s smoking. The railway crew had searched for the offender but they could not locate the person and now CCTV footage recordings are being analysed to find out the passenger, a press release received from the Madurai Division of Southern Railway has informed yesterday evening.

The Vande Bharat trains are equipped with smoke and fire detection system with advanced sensors to detect smoking, overheating, electrical issues and fire. Each coach has more than 10 strategically placed sensors including those in lavatories and undercarriages.

“Smoking in trains is prohibited and carries a fine of Rs.500. Violators are also booked under sections 145B and 167 of the Railway Act by the Railway Protection Force,” the press release had cautioned those who are indulging in smoking on trains.
