MADURAI: Human rights campaigner and a popular advocate in Madurai Mr.S.Vanchinathan has today urged the teaching fraternity, retired staff, MKU pensioners, intellectuals and the general public to come to the streets and save the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) in Madurai which is now facing a very deep financial crisis.
“It is time to involve the students in a massive agitation to save MKU. We must come to the streets to get funds for MKU fully. In the coming elections in Tamil Nadu, it will be an important time for our university in Madurai. MKU should be saved because State Government is also a part of the Syndicate of this university. This university is now being saved by its pensioners. Is this a right ‘Dravidian Model’ when universities are struggling for employees’ salaries and pensions every month? What is happening at Arittapatti near Madurai now to stop Tungsten mining is an example to say that people’s united fight will get the desired result. Like that in MKU in Madurai, only pensioners are saving this university. There are State Government representatives in MKU Syndicate also. So, how can they deny now? The Government is also a part of the Syndicate of MKU. The coming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu will be very crucial for Madurai Kamaraj University, to save this prestigious university. If we do not act now, remember the telecom BSNL example of how it was killed gradually in stages,” popular advocate Mr.S.Vanchinathan of Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, has said while addressing the pensioners day function at MKU College in Madurai today- December 17th 2024.
Dr.N.Periathambi of TN Government College Teachers’ Association (Madurai district) and MKU Pensioners Association president Prof.A.Srinivasan along with secretary Mr.A.Swaminathan were among those who had addressed the large gathering of MKU pensioners along with retired joint director A.P.N.Balasubramaniam and others.
Prof.A.Srinivasan, president, MKU Retired Employees Association, had stressed that the employees want only the old pension scheme and not anything else. There are 1,187 pensioners in MKU and among them 524 are administrative staff, 225 are teachers and 438 are family pensioners.
