CHENNAI: World Chess Champion D.Gukesh is a Velammal school student and the Velammal Group of educational institutions is proud that he was a student at Velammal Vidyalaya at Mel Ayanambakkam in Chennai- from where he had emerged to the pinnacle of chess world and is today an inspiring story for the younger generation.

Velammal school student chess GM D.Gukesh won the world chess championship title at a young age as a prodigy from Chennai. He had a meteoric rise from Velammal Vidyalaya at Mel Ayanambakkam in Chennai to the current pinnacle of world chess champion. It is very inspiring, Gukesh began his chess loves at an early age and he was nurtured by strong academic and extracurricular foundation provided by Velammal school which is known for fostering talent at a young age, the school identified his potential early on and offered him support to develop his chess game skills. He earned his Grand Master title at the age of 12 years becoming one of the youngest ever to achieve this feat. He surprised legendary Viswanathan Anand in FIDE rankings. Today, he is a Chennai icon and D.Gukesh’s rise from a school boy with chess passion to the level of world chess champion is a testament to his dedication and the support given by the school like Velammal that nurtures young talent,” Mr.M.V.Muthuramalingam, Chairman of Velammal Educational Trust, has said in his congratulatory message on December 14th 2024 to the new World Chess Champion D.Gukesh who defeated Ding Liren and became world champion at a young age, in the chess championship held in Singapore.
