MADURAI: Lok Sabha MP from Virudhunagar constituency Mr.B.Manickam Tagore had urged the railways to operate MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) trains from Madurai to neighbouring towns and cities because it is a public demand.

He wrote a letter to Union Railways Minister Mr.Ashwini Vaishnaw in this regard on September 30th 2024 and requested him to consider the long standing public demand and take necessary steps to start MEMU train services from Madurai.

The proposed routes for MEMU trains suggested by the MP are: Madurai-Virudhunagar-Tirunelveli, Madurai-Virudhunagar-Semgottai, Madurai-Manamadurai-Paramakudi, Madurai-Dindigul-Trichy and Madurai-Usilampatti-Theni.

“Despite successful operations in Tiruchi and Thiruvananthapuram railway divisions, the Madurai Railway Division is yet to implement MEMU train services. The proposed routes are already electrified and hence easy for the railways to commence operations. MEMU trains from Madurai would address the pressing needs of hundreds of daily commuters travelling to Madurai for work and business. It improves connectivity and convenience for our people here,” Virudhunagar MP Mr.Manickam Tagore has urged in his letter to Union Minister of Railways and a copy of that letter was sent to Southern Railway General Manager R.N.Singh also.
