‘Safety Box’ introduced at Vaigai Engg College; Leading lawyers sensitize students on anti-drugs and workplace harassment

MADURAI: Aimed at fostering a healthy, safe and inclusive environment for its students and staff, the Vaigai College of Engineering near Madurai had organised the inauguration of Anti-Drugs Club (ADC) and Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) on September 20th 2024.

Two leading lawyers-Mr.K.Samidurai, State president of Indian Association of Lawyers and Mrs.J.Anandhavalli, president of Women Advocates Association-Madurai, were invited by the college to sensitize the students and staff about the collective efforts to curb drug addiction and handling complaints with fairness respectively.

The Principal of Vaigai College of Engineering Dr.R.Sivaranjani has introduced ‘Safety Box’ initiative for providing a secure and anonymous platform for the students to submit their complaints and concerns, a press release received from the college has said yesterday.

Advocate Mr.K.Samidurai had elaborated on the need for collective efforts to curb drug addiction especially among youth and the crucial role to be played by educational institutions in shaping responsible citizens while he also highlighted the legal ramifications and the importance to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Lawyer Mrs.J.Anandhavalli spoke about the importance of Internal Complaints Committee and the responsibilities of ICC members in handling the complaints with fairness, sensitivity and transparency, and the legal frameworks that are available to protect individuals from harassment and discrimination, the press release said.

“Both the distinguished lawyers gave a thorough orientation and critical issues of substance abuse and workplace harassment. The key members of Anti-Drugs Club and Internal Complaints Committee were introduced at the inaugural event on September 20th 2024, they were entrusted with the responsibility of upholding the college’s values of integrity, safety and inclusiveness. It is a beginning of engaged efforts towards eradicating drug related issues and also ensuring a harassment free campus at Vaigai Engineering College,” the college Principal had stressed.

Mrs.N.A.Pappathi, Head, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering who is ICC presiding officer and Dr.M.K.V.Karthikeyan, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering who is the Single Point of Contact of Anti-Drugs Committee, were among those present at the inaugural function.
