
MADURAI: New office-bearers of People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) Madurai district were elected at the district general body meeting held here on August 11th 2024.
Executive Committee for the next two years was elected and the office-bearers are: S.Krishnaswamy is president while R.Murali and P.Vijaya Kumar will be vice-presidents. A.Jon Vincent is secretary of PUCL Madurai, S.Manikandan and S.Thiagarajan are joint secretaries, and P.Kanmani will be the treasurer, according to a press release received yesterday.
Two important resolutions were passed at this district general body meeting and it includes an appeal to the Tamil Nadu State government to set up a branch of State Human Rights Commission in Madurai for the benefit of people of southern districts, on the lines of Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court which was established in Madurai 20 years ago and it is of great use now to people of 14 districts.
The PUCL Madurai also passed a resolution urging the Union Government to abandon the three new criminal laws which deny fair trial, and it demanded for implementing the earlier three laws namely Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code and Indian Evidence Act with necessary amendments, the press release said.
