MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association from Tamil Nadu had today requested the Union Finance Minister Mrs.Nirmala Sitharaman to consider having only one rate of GST taxation for ‘Namkeen’ items called as salty, savory, snack food items.

“At present in our country, there are different types of spicy snacks like ‘namkeens’ such as ‘Kaara Sevu’, Kaara Boondhi, Pakoda and mixture etc available in the market. Under the GST, for these type of items, two different tax rates are announced in GST, i.e.5 % and 12 %. These rates are for OTHER THAN pre-packed and labelled, and it is 12 per cent FOR pre-packed and labelled. Sweets, spicy snacks and namkeens etc are consumed daily by the general public of our country and hence we appeal that they should be levied only 5 % GST. We all know that ‘Kaara Sevu’ like snack is a popular variety of spicy snacks in Tamil Nadu and hence taken as an example.

If these snack commodities are levied only 5 % GST, then the compliance to pay taxes will be more and the Government of India will get more taxation revenue. It will benefit the manufacturers, traders etc,” Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association president S.V.S.S.Velshankar, honorary secretary S.Sai Subramaniam and honorary advisor S.P.Jeyapragasam, have appealed through a press statement issued from Madurai today- on July 8th 2024- to the Prime Minister and Union Finance Minister.
