MADURAI: An appeal has been made to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr.M.K.Stalin for his intervention to fulfil the reasonable demands of teachers working in Government-aided colleges in the State.

Teachers’ association MUTA has planned a mass representation program tomorrow- on June 24th 2024 at the office of Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education in Madurai and Tirunelveli in order to draw the Government’s attention. It also decided to hold a series of protests including fasting and picketing at various places in coming days.

“The Higher Education Department has issued G.O. No.5 on January 11th 2021 for the revision of pay of university and college teachers based on UGC recommendation and the Seventh Pay Commission. Following G.O.No.5, the teachers working in all the universities and Government colleges in Tamil Nadu have been paid due salaries along with arrears. The teachers of government aided colleges have been given Associate Professor promotions only on paper, but no salary has been given till date,” Dr.M.Nagarajan, MUTA general secretary, had pointed out in a press release issued from Madurai yesterday- on June 22nd 2024.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR CADRE SALARY:

MUTA general secretary Dr.M.Nagarajan has said that out of eight regions in Tamil Nadu, aided college teachers of six regions are not given due salary for the associate professor cadre. The regions include Chennai, Tiruchi, Vellore, Cuddalore, Madurai and Tirunelveli.

“However aided college teachers in Coimbatore and Thanjavur regions have been paid salary for reasons known only to the Higher Education Department. The irony is that in the last fiscal year 2023-24, an amount of Rs.200 crores was returned to the Finance Department. Hence it is clear that it may nt be true to say that there is lack of funds in the Higher Education Department. Also, in this financial year, adequate funds were allocated to pay salaries for promotion of teachers, along with arrears by the Finance Department of Government of Tamil Nadu,” the MUTA general secretary had pointed out.

He appealed to the Tamil Nadu government and Higher Education Department to take steps for release of salary withheld for teachers working in six regions and also urged the Chief Minister for his intervention because the Higher Education Department had not responded for the past three years despite making several representations and protests.
