MADURAI: A committee which was constituted by the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (Tamil Nadu) had given its full report on repeated serial explosions in Sivakasi firecracker units at Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district in Tamil Nadu and the immediate steps to be taken by government authorities to prevent explosions in future.

This committee can done a ground study of firecrackers manufacturing factories in Sivakasi as people are anguished that fire accidents in Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district in Tamil Nadu are going up in number, and that 83 fire cracker plants were rocked by explosions and fire accidents in the last 50 months between January 2020 and February 2024, and in these accidents 93 persons had died of burns, according to a press release given by the committee from Madurai yesterday.

The study group at Sivakasi included Prof.R.Murali, (former Principal of Madura College), Com.Anthony Muthu (president, Construction Workers Union), Com.Mathivanan (CPI ML Madurai District Secretary), Ms.Kanmani of PUCL, Com.Avudayappan (CPI ML Virudhunagar distrtct secretary), Com.Murugan-AICCTU Virudhunagar district abd Com.Guruvammal (Semmalar Trade Union-Sivakasi).

This study report of Sivakasi fire cracker manufacturing units was released at a press meet held in Madurai on June 12th 2024 by highlighting the various hazards and challenges connected to cracker industry in Sivakasi.
