MADURAI: The world famous Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai has sent out an eye-opening message today- on June 1st 2024- that eye cancer can be treated with the world class treatment facilities available here and that there are many eye cancer survivors from children of 18 months baby to 3 years child who got treated and their eye vision was saved by treating the cancer.
“Retinoblastoma awareness is being done successfully by Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai thanks to the ‘Ring of Hope’ service movement that is saving the eye vision and saving lives. Retinoblastoma is one particular type of eye cancer. Today, 205 children who are eye cancer survivors came here to celebrate and motivate others who are undergoing treatment. This is an eye cancer condition that occurs in 18 months to 3 years of age for the kids. There will be a white reflex in the eye among the affected babies and pediatricians must alert the parents,” Dr.R.Usha Kim, Chief Orbit, Oculoplasty and Ocular Oncology, Aravind Eye Hospital and Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology, told reporters at a press meet in Madurai today- on June 1st 2024.
FREE TREATMENT IS AVAILABLE:
Dr.Usha Kim told reporters at today’s press meet that free treatment is available for deserving eye cancer patients and money should not be a block to get their vision.
“We are dealing with all types of eye cancer in Aravind Eye Hospital from 0-day to 100 years. Today’s celebration event at Aravind Eye Hospital is a strong message that eye cancer can be treated with success,” Dr.Usha Kim has said at the press conference on June 1st 2024.

WHITE REFLEX IS A GENETIC ALERT?
She also said that affordability of patients should not be a deterrent now because Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai is successfully treating eye cancer conditions like ‘RETINOBLASTOMA’ and the presence of 205 children at today’s celebration event is an indication that this type of eye cancer can be treated successfully by ophthalmologists.
“All facilities are available here in Madurai with us to give chemotherapy, radiation etc. We have advanced treatment facilities. Patients need not go to Chennai. The ‘Ring of Hope’ project became a big hope for eye cancer patients and affected families. Research genetic studies are going on…..we focus on siblings also. Samples of 540 families were tested for genetic study . Today’s celebration event in Aravind Eye Hospital is a motivation for others and we also thank all our supporters, donors and the Aravind Eye Hospital team,” Dr.Usha Kim told reporters at the press meet on June 1st 2024.
Among those who witnessed the eye cancer survivor children’s event at LAICO auditorium in Aravind Eye Hospital today morning include eye care greats and India’s top ophthalmology names including Dr.P.Namperumalsamy, Dr.Mrs.G.Nachiyar, Dr.Kim and great academician-researcher/ scientist Prof.Dharmalingam.
