MADURAI: The academic year and financial year 2023-24 have come to a close right now, but the staff and pensioners of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) here are still waiting for the past eight months for their DA (Dearness Allowance) hike and arrears announced by the Tamil Nadu Government.
As the university is now struggling to pay monthly salary and pension promptly to its employees on time due to financial crisis, the DA hike and arrears could not be paid to the staff and pensioners even as Tamil Nadu Government had announced DA for its employees last year.
“The DA arrears and DA hike could not be implemented by our Madurai Kamaraj University in Madurai because of paucity of funds. DA was increased by the government last July 2023 and it could not be paid till November 2023. Along with that arrears amount, we need more funds now to pay the DA hike and right now out university needs Rs.3 crores plus to settle the DA component as on date for staff and pensioners,” sources in MKU told ‘Lotus Times’ media in Madurai on April 27th 2024.
There are 1,192 pensioners and 408 employees right now in the MKU payment bill but they have been fighting for their salary and pension because the university is unable to disburse salary and pension on date for the past several months due to funds crunch and has been getting financial support from the State government only after protests and strike, sources added.
