Vocational Excellence Award for Madurai-based green economy campaigner; Chennai Rotary Club honours ‘Thozhuvam’ founder

MADURAI: Dr.P.Kabilan, founder and senior researcher of sustainable pastoral activity movement called ‘Thozhuvam’ in Madurai (www.thozhuvam.org), was conferred and presented the Vocational Excellence Award by Rotary Club of Chennai Towers at a function held in Chennai on April 25th 2024, in recognition of his contributions for the welfare of grazing community, cattle farmers and pastoralism along with other livestock issues.

Dr.Kabilan is Associate Professor in Department of Computer Science and Vice-Principal of MKU College at Alagarkoil Road in Madurai.

The Rotary Club of Chennai Towers, which was started 26 years ago as a part of Rotary International District 3233, had chosen Dr.P.Kabilan from Madurai for this year’s Vocational Excellence Award (in the category of Agriculture) which carries a shield and a citation.

Dr.N.K.Senthamarai Kannan IPS, former Additional Director General of Police, was invited as chief guest for awards presentation function that took place in Egmore in Chennai on April 25th 2024. Rtn.R.Gopalakrishnan, Rotary District Director (Vocational Services), Rtn.Binoy, club president, Rtn.Jayashree K P, secretary and Rtn.Aarthi Varanasi (vocational service), were among those present at the awards ceremony.

FOR TRADITIONAL GRAZING:

“Prof.Kabilan has worked on UNESCO sponsored projects that focused on the ethnography of semi-nomadic herding community of South India….His interest in the subject of local cattle breeds and herding practices have led him to start an organization ‘Thozhuvam’ in Madurai. Through this organization, Dr.Kabilan is working in soil and biodiversity preservation, carbon sequestering by encouraging traditional grazing and penning techniques. Cattle cow dung is being used to make products…..Thozhuvam is into active research by collaborating with esteemed life sciences institutions around the world to study pastoral and rangeland contribution in mitigating climate change,” the award citation said.
