India now needs 8,000 urban planners for cities’ development: CMDA Chairman Anshul Mishra speaks at TCE in Madurai (Part 1)

MADURAI: The Member Secretary and Executive Head of CMDA (Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority) Mr.Anshul Mishra IAS has given a very important piece of information that India immediately needs 8,000 more urban planners who can plan for our existing and future cities and also rectify the gaps, mistakes that happened in the past designs of city planning in urbanisation process.

“As per NITI Aayog report, the requirement of urban planners is over 12,000 for our country. At present we have around 5,000 urban planners in India. So, we we need another 8,000 qualified urban planners to plan for our cities in India. The gaps and mistakes we did must be rectified, because urban planning got neglected for a long time, but is now picking up. Real life situations must be taken into account because urban problems are a huge challenge,” Mr.Anshul Mishra IAS has said here in Madurai today-April 10th 2024.

He was in Madurai today to participate as chief guest at new programme courses launch in Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) here where its architecture department had launched new courses- (M.Plan and B.Des), and also signed a MoU with CEPT University-Ahmedabad for M.Plan program.

The Thiagarajar School of Environmental Design and Architecture at TCE here is going for academic collaboration with CEPT University in Ahmedabad in Gujarat for M.Plan Program.

Mr.Barjor Mehta, president and acting director, CEPT University-Ahmedabad,Gujarat, and Mr.K.Hari Thiagarajan, Chairman and Correspondent of Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE), Madurai, Dr.S.Rajaram, Registrar of TCE and Dr.Jinu L.Kitchley, Professor and Head, Department of Architecture. TCE, were among those who spoke and stressed that India needs trained professionals in urban planning due to the changing landscape, rapid urbanisation, climate change, global warming, green economy needs and to protect local water bodies etc.
