‘Kolkata Declaration’ given to Su.Venkatesan in Madurai; Science team hands over statement on scientific temper

MADURAI: A copy of the Kolkata Declaration 2024 on scientific temper was handed over to Madurai sitting MP and the contesting CPI (M) candidate of Madurai Lok Sabha constituency Mr.Su.Venkatesan here today-March 31st 2024.

The All India People’s Science Network (AIPSN) had given to the MP a shorter version of the Kolkata 2024 Statement and Declaration on Scientific Temper and the team included AIPSN vice-president S.Krishnaswamy, former general secretary of AIPSN Mr.P.Rajamanickam and others.

In a press statement issued today, Prof.S.Krishnaswamy and Dr.Rajamanickam have informed that the People’s Science Movements (PSMs) in India under the All India People’s Science Network along with representatives from intellectuals, scientists and academics met in Kolkata and on National Science Day on February 28th 2024 adopted what is called Kolkata 2024 Statement and Declaration on scientific temper in this critical election year.

“One of the reasons as stated in the Kolkata Declaration is that in the current environment, there is an urgent need to eliminate threats that undermine the humanistic approach and to uphold the Constitution of India. We handed over a copy to Mr.Su.Venkatesan in Madurai today with confidence that it will enable taking up the need for scientific temper during the current election campaign and in the future sessions,” the AIPSN has said today.

KOLKATA DECLARATION FOCUS:

The Kolkata Declaration 2024 says that “in the current environment, the threats that undermine the humanistic approach are coming to attention through pseudo science, blind faith, social blasphemy, discrimination and imposition of a single opinion by claiming to be the majority. The first step is to eliminate these threats.”

This statement and declaration was signed by more than 200 multi-disciplinary scientists, educators, science and social activists who stressed that religious discriminatory practices, interference with the freedom of other religions and irrational practices should be opposed. It also focused on more funding for scientific research.
