MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has made an appeal to Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Mr.Satyabrata Sahoo IAS not to confiscate cash from small traders, travelling tourists and also from the general public who are carrying cash for marriages etc.
In a statement issued from Madurai on March 28th 2024, the association has requested the Chief Electoral Officer to give instructions to flying squads/ vehicle searching teams to know the genuine reason for holding cash.
“A few days back, Rs.69,400 cash was confiscated from a tourist couple who came from Ooty by the election authorities even though they showed their air travel tickets etc. Hence we request the CEO to take steps and stop confiscating cash from small traders, travelling tourists and street vendors,” Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association president Mr.S.V.S.S.Velshankar, honorary secretary Mr.S.Sai Subramaniam and honorary advisor Mr.S.P.Jeyapragasam have requested in their letter sent to Tamil nadu Chief Electoral Officer Mr.Satyabrata Sahoo yesterday.
The said that cash is being confiscated by citing electoral code of conduct, but small traders procure their materials daily. “The cash is being deposited in the treasury and it will take a long time to get the money back. Hence we request you not to confiscate cash from small traders if they give proper explanation for carrying cash more than Rs.50,000,” the association has appealed from Madurai in its letter on March 28th 2024.
