MADURAI: The Senate meeting of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) here today- on March 28th 2024- had witnessed heated exchanges and a walkout by Senate members as they had strongly objected to the denial of permission by Vice-Chancellor Prof.J.Kumar to raise salary issue in the Senate meeting.
MKU Senate members Dr.P.Ponramu, Dr.A.Velanganni Joseph, Dr.G.Prabakaran and others had expressed their objections on the Vice-Chancellor’s approach in conducting Senate meeting by not allowing the members to speak on important issues.
“We are also here in the Senate of MKU for developing our university. Your are telling us to sit whenever we raise a point. We will walk out because you are not allowing us to speak. We are asking about why salary was not disbursed to 45 non-teaching administrative staff of our university who got a stay through court order on salary re-fixation. If the Vice-Chancellor simply says that we should sit, we will stage a walkout. Salary is something to survive. For last six months, we are not getting salary on time. The strike period salary should be paid without any deduction,” Dr.Velanganni Joseph, Dr.Ponramu, Dr.Chandra Bose, M.P.Ganesan and other Senate members told reporters after staging a walkout from the MKU Senate meeting here today on March 28th 2024.
About 16 members had walked out of the Senate meeting of MKU here today and questioned the attitude of MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof.J.Kumar for not allowing the members to speak and just asking them to sit down in their chair.
The total attendance of MKU Senate meeting today was very less as only 36 members were present and 16 members had walked out, but came back to their seats after the Registrar and Syndicate members’ intervention at Mu.Va.Hall entrance in university campus where the Senate members had gathered expressing their anger.
When the members walked out and questioned whether there is a quorum to continue the Senate meeting, the MKU Registrar in-charge Prof.Dr.M.Ramakrishnan came out of the Senate meeting to pacify the angry Senate members who raised slogans condemning the Vice-Chancellor who was not allowing the members to speak even though the salary is pending and the staff salary is not being disbursed on time for the past six months.
Other Senate members including Dr.C.Gopi and Dr.M.Sulthan Ibrahim spoke on staff and student issues voicing their support as adjournment motions moved at today’s Senate meeting.
