MADURAI: Tumours detected in the two adrenal glands of a 33-year-old woman patient from Sivaganga were successfully removed through a unique laparoscopic procedure done by the surgical team of gastroenterology at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) in Madurai recently.
The MMHRC doctors had used an intricate ‘cortical-sparing adrenalectomy’ surgical technique for this rare case of tumours in both adrenal glands that requires precision and exceptional surgical skills.
Speaking to reporters at a press meet in MMHRC here today- on February 26th 2024, the doctors said that the entire two hours operation was performed laparoscopically and there is a swift recovery for the patient.
“The patient was diagnosed with bilateral adrenal tumour. Size of the tumour in the right side adrenal gland was 10 cm and the tumour in the left side adrenal gland was 2 cm. Due to these two tumours, this patient was having high blood pressure because of bilateral pheochromocytoma which is a very rare case. We performed ‘Partial Adrenalectomy which means the surgeons had removed the right side adrenal gland and spared the cortex of the left side adrenal gland so that the patient would not develop hormonal deficiency,” Dr.Ramesh Ardhanari, Medical Director, Head and Senior Consultant, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, MMHRC, has said.
He stressed that this surgery is very unique because ‘partial adrenalectomy’ preserves the gland functioning and lifelong medication is not required for the patient.
TWO ADRENAL GLANDS IN HUMAN BODY:
Dr.Ramesh Ardhanari explained to media persons that human body has two adrenal glands located above the kidneys and these glands are responsible for producing hormones essential for regulating body metabolism, blood pressure and stress response.
“Tumour in adrenal gland is rare and that too bilateral is rarer. After a thorough study, our medical team went in for cortical sparing technique and we did it successfully one month back. The patient continues to be normal and this is the first time in Tamil Nadu that laparoscopic procedure was performed going for cortical sparing adrenalectomy,” he added.
Dr.Srinivasan Ramachandran, Senior Consultant, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Dr.N.Maharajan, Senior Consultant and Head, Department of Anaesthesiology and Dr.S.Jegadesh Chandra Bose, Senior Consultant- Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, were present at the press meet held in Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre in Madurai on February 26th 2024.
