MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has made an appeal from Madurai to Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mr.M.K.Stalin to take steps for supplying orid dhall for ‘appalam’ manufacturers at a subsidized rate by the government.

It had sent a representation to Central and State governments on February 20th 2024 to safeguard the stakeholders who are making appalam in micro and small level across the copuntry.

“In our country, making of appalam is happening as micro and small level industry both in rural and urban areas. Recently, the rate of orid dhal has increased a lot and it is a main ingredient for making of appalams. So, we request the Central and State governments to supply orid dhal at a subsidized rate to appalam manufacturers,” Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association secretary S.Sai Subramaniam and honorary advisor S.P.Jeyapragasam have appealed in their representation on behalf of appalam manufacturers.

They also pointed out that at present the central government is distributing rice at the rate of Rs.29 per kg when the market rate of rice is high. “Gram dhall is also sold at Rs.60 per kg through Bharat Dhall Scheme. Likewise, we request that the government cna supply orid dhall at a subsidized price to save appalam manufacturers,” the association said.
