MADURAI: The Joint Action Council of College Teachers (JAC), Tamil Nadu has today urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) to withdraw the draft guidelines regarding dereservation of posts in central government universities, central-funded universities and deemed to be universities.

In a press statement issued on January 28th 2024, the JAC which represents various college teachers’ organisations in the State, has said that the draft guidelines must be withdrawn to ensure social justice in higher education institutions.

“The UGC through its draft guidelines dated 27th December 2023 says that unfilled OBC, SC and ST teaching and non-teaching posts are filled by the general category candidates in central government universities, central funded universities and Deemed to be Universities. We oppose this totally. If there are no qualified individuals within the reserved quota, appropriate training should be given to the candidates from respective categories and appoint them to the relevant posts,” Dr.S.Suresh, Convenor, JAC-Tamil Nadu, has said in an urgent press statement on January 28th 2024.

He also stressed that UGC’s attempts to eliminate reservation of posts and seats which are meant for Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes will be opposed because it is against social justice.

“Considering unfilled reserved quota seats as vacancies in the general turn and not as backlog may lead to weakening of overall reservation system. The current rule is that if there are no qualified candidates from the reserved category, they are to be classified as backlog positions and can be filled later. We urge the UGC to withdraw its dereservation draft guidelines,” Dr.Suresh has said.
