MADURAI: Former Vice-Chancellor of Periyar University in Salem Prof.Dr.K.Muthuchelian has said that higher education in India has several challenges to be addressed even though it has seen an impressive growth in terms of number of institutions and in student enrolment.
“There are several challenges. Shortage of quality faculty is a challenge in higher education today and inadequate funding for research is another challenge,” he pointed out while speaking at the 3rd Graduation Day of Nagarathinam Angalammal Arts and Science College in Madurai today- on January 27th 2024.
Stating that the total spending and fund allocation for education must be increased by the governments, he expressed concern that the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) is still low in India.
“According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) Report 2020-21, the total number of students enrolled in higher education has climbed to about 4.14 crores. Of the total enrolment in higher education, 51.6 per cent of students were enrolled in UG level, 26.2 per cent in PG and 22.2 per cent in Ph.D. There are 16.1 lakh teachers in higher education institutions in India, of which 60.5 per cent of teachers have a Ph.D degree,” he said citing the AISHE report.
The 3rd graduation day of Nagarathinam Angalammal Arts and Science College (situated near Madurai airport) was held today.
Mrs.Pushpa Sathyanarayana, Judicial Member, National Green Tribunal (Southern Zone)-Chennai and former Judge of Madras High Court, delivered the graduation day address and distributed degrees to passing out graduates.
Dr.S.Nagarathinam, college chairman, Dr.N.Jegatheesan, Secretary and Correspondent, N.Rajendiran and N.Karthikeyan, Trustees and Dr.K.Arjunan, college Principal, were among those present along with faculty, staff, passing out graduates and students.
