Ticket checking in trains earns Rs.5.4 crores in Madurai Railway Division through fines

MADURAI: The Madurai Railway Division had earned/collected Rs.5.4 crores as penalty and fines through ticket checking drive in trains in this financial year till October 2023.

Ticket checking staff are working in full swing at railway stations in the Madurai division of Southern Railway and the average monthly earnings of the division from ticket checking is Rs.78 lakhs as of now this financial year.

A press release received from the Madurai Division here on October 28th 2023 had informed that penalty is being charged by the ticket checking staff from ticket-less travellers, those passengers travelling in higher classes of train using lower class tickets, passengers travelling beyond the destination point mentioned in their tickets, unbooked luggage, smoking and littering in railway premises etc.

“Reserved passengers wrongly getting into the train at midnight without verifying their date of journey is being noticed during the ticket checking drives,” the press release said. The minimum fine amount for ticket less travel is Rs.250, and in addition to that ticket charge from the train originating station or from the last ticket checking point will also be collected from passengers.

SPECIAL TEAMS DEPLOYED:

During the Puja holidays, there was a heavy rush of passengers in trains in all southern States and special ticket checking squads were deployed in trains like Chennai Egmore-Guruvayur-Chennai Egmore Express, Chennai Central-Palakkad Junction-Chennai Central Express etc.

“The special squads had ensured hassle free travel to passengers and also took action against ticket less travellers and unreserved passengers travelling in reserved coaches.
