MADURAI: Devadoss Hospital in Madurai, which is an orthopaedic treatment pioneer in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, had given a public alert health message yesterday that more women are facing and suffering bone fractures in post-menopause and it is a significant health concern.
“In India alone, osteoporosis related fractures are estimated to affect nearly 1.5 million people annually with majority of these fractures reported in post-menopausal women. This is a significant health concern for post-menopausal women in India. In a recent study, it was stated that the overall prevalence of osteoporotic fractures among posy-menopausal women stood at a staggering 82.2 per cent. The overall osteoporosis for females is estimated to be around 25 to 30 per cent. This is a wake up call for every hospital that specializes in orthopaedics because more women are coming with complaints of bone fractures. Nearly 90,000 women in this stage are likely to encounter hip fracture each year of which a substantial number of fracture cases are post-menopause,” said Dr.Sathish Devadoss, Vice-Chairman of Devadoss Hospital in Madurai, at an important press conference here in Madurai on October 20th 2023 to mark the World Osteoporosis Day with focus on ‘Step up for Bone Health’ especially for the post-menopausal women.
He had cautioned that osteoporosis is sadly often going undiagnosed in India with studies suggesting that only 20 per cent of individuals who should receive treatment of osteoporosis are actually going for treatment, due to lack of awareness.
CALCIUM DEFICIENCY AND DIET HABITS:
Nearly 20,000 of hip fractures are reported due to dietary habits in south India where vegetarian diet also plays a role for calcium deficiency.
“For creating awareness, the Devadoss Hospital in Madurai had tied up with schools in and around Madurai to make students imagine and draw their own orthopedic surgical robot, for students from 5th to 9th standard and 30 best entries invited to the hospital to witness the joint replacement robotic system in Devadoss Hospital,” Dr.Sathish Devadoss has said.
The Devadoss Hospital in Madurai had organised a press meet in Madurai on 20th October 2023 for World Osteoporosis Day with theme ‘Step up for Bone Health’, where the overall prevalence of osteoporotic fracture among post-menopause females was particularly highlighted.
