MADURAI: The Department of Social Work and Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Science of Alagappa University at Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu had conducted suicide prevention awareness programme on September 20th 2023 in the varsity campus to commemorate World Suicide Prevention Week 2023 in collaboration with Athma Hospital-Trichy. Every year, the world suicide prevention day is observed on 10th September.
Dr.R.Stalin-IPS, who is a senior police officer in the rank of ASP-Karaikudi, had initiated the suicide prevention awareness program in the presence of Dr.M.A.Velusamy, Head in-charge of Department of Social Work who had delivered the welcome address.
Alagappa University Syndicate Member Dr.K.Gunasekaran and Dr.J.Sujatha Malini, Head in-charge, Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Science, spoke about the issues that arise due to persons committing suicide.
From Athma Hospital in Tiruchi, Mr.J.Karan Louis who is project director (Mind Club) and community social worker and Ms.Karthiga, counsellor, spoke about prevention of suicidal thoughts and the contribution made by social workers to prevent suicides.
Mr.J.Vignesh Sabarikiran, teaching assistant, had proposed a vote of thanks in this event in which a large number of students from social work department had participated to create suicide prevention awareness, signature campaign and cultural performances.
