Don’t print Aadhaar number on degree certificates, provisional certificates: UGC strictly tells Vice-Chancellors and college Principals

MADURAI: The University Grants Commission has told the universities and colleges not to print the Aadhaar number of students on provisinal certificates and degree certificates since it is not permissible under Aadhaar rules.

Sources said that Prof.Manish R.Joshi, UGC Secretary had written a letter on September 1st 2023 in this regard to the Vice-Chancellors of all universities and to the Principals of all colleges and educational institutes.

“This letter is about displaying of Aadhaar number on provisional certificates and degrees issued by universities. It has been brought to the notice of UGC that some State governments are considering the printing of full Aadhaar number of university students on provisional certificates and degrees issued by the universities, for subsequent use in verification of the said documents at the time of recruitment or admission. In this regard, attention is invited to sub-regulation (3) of regulation 6 of the Aadhaar (Sharing of Information) Regulations, 2016, which provide that no entity in possession of the Aadhaar number shall make public any database or record containing the same, unless the Aadhaar number has been redacted or blacked out through appropriate means. Under the regulations, as they currently stand, printing of the Aadhar number on provisional certificates and degrees is not permissible,” the UGC Secretary Prof.Manish R.Joshi, has said in his letter dated 1st September 2023, according to sources.

The higher education institutions have been asked to strictly comply with the Aadhaar rules and regulations of Unique Identification Authority of India.
