MADURAI: Following the call given by All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organizations (AIFUCTO), teachers of various colleges in Madurai today took part in protests demanding the withdrawal of National Education Policy (NEP) and also pressing for important demands of teaching fraternity.
Members of MUTA participated in a protest held at M.S.S.Wakf Board College in Madurai on August 1st 2023 where they raised three major demands- withdrawal of NEP 2020, restore the Old Pension Scheme and implement the G.O given for promotions.
The Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa and Alagappa University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) had responded to the protest call given by AIFUCTO and Joint Forum for Movement on Education (JFME) urging teachers’ associations to hold protests in all States on August 1st 2023 opposing the National Education Policy 2020 and implement old pension scheme.
Mr.A.T.Senthamaraikannan, MUTA president, who was present at the protest held in Wakf Board College in Madurai today, had demanded that the Union government should withdraw NEP immediately and also urged the Tamil Nadu State government to implement Old Pension Scheme (OPS) which is a long pending demand of teachers and government employees.
“In Tamil Nadu, the Joint Action Council of College Teachers is fighting for the demands of college teachers. MUTA is demanding the State government to implement what was promised in the manifesto before the present government came to power. It said that OPS will be implemented and that is what we are appealing now. Apart from old pension scheme, the college teachers also urged the Higher Education Department in Tamil Nadu to implement the G.O issued on 11-1-2021 for giving timely promotions to teachers. We are also demanding for regularization of service for those working in all aided colleges,” MUTA president Mr.Senthamaraikannan has said while addressing the college teachers.
Among those who participated in the protest and gate slogan held in Madurai today include Dr.Mumtaz, president of MUTA unit at M.S.S.Wakf Board College, V.Veluchamy, Meer Ismail and other members. Similar protests also took place at Saraswathi Narayanan College, Yadava College and several other colleges in southern districts under the aegis of MUTA.
